Welcome & Program Overview

The Sargent Early Learning Center is a Cooperative Learning Center offering a developmentally appropriate program for children ages 12 months (and walking) through 6 years. Our goal is to provide a positive early learning experience that builds self‑esteem, social skills, motor development, and early cognitive learning. Children learn through play, music and movement, school‑readiness activities, and hands‑on learning centers, all guided by caring, professional staff. We follow the Sargent School District calendar and are licensed for a maximum of 66 children. 

Sargent Early Learning Center is committed to providing safe, high‑quality care in a nurturing environment where children learn through play, exploration, and positive relationships. We partner with families to support each child’s academic, social, and emotional growth, preparing them for future success in school and in life.

A full educational and enrichment program is provided to meet the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs of the children in our care. The program is planned and conducted by trained personnel who are interested in guiding each child’s maturity to the maximum potential. Our goal is to provide a safe, loving, learning experience that is based on the respect of the individual and the rights of others. Creativity is fostered and self-discipline encouraged as we assist each child in achieving the ultimate goal of a good self-image of themselves and their capabilities. 

Families play an important role in supporting a positive school experience. Here are some ways you can help your child have a successful day at SELC:

• Read this handbook carefully so you understand our policies and procedures.

• Ensure your child gets a good night’s sleep.

• Maintain regular eating routines at home.

• Help your child leave for school unhurried and happy whenever possible.

• Take an interest in what your child shares about their day.

• Appreciate early artistic efforts. Instead of asking “What is it?”, try saying “Tell me about it.”

• Establish a consistent drop‑off routine. Reassure your child that you will return, hand them over to the teacher, and then leave—even if your child is crying. Most children calm within a few minutes. Preparing them ahead of time by talking about the fun they will have can help them feel secure.

• Help your child feel confident in your love, support, and understanding.

• Reach out to your child’s teacher or the director anytime you have questions or concerns, or if there is information that may help us support your child.

• Birthdays

Birthdays are a special time, and we love celebrating with your child. Celebrations will take place during the regular snack period. Please make arrangements with your child’s teacher in advance.

• Clothing

Children should wear clothing that is comfortable, washable, sturdy, and easy for them to manage independently.  Weather‑appropriate clothing is required each day, including coats, gloves, and boots during cold weather. Each child must also keep a weather‑appropriate change of clothing at school for emergencies. All personal items—including clothing, sweaters, coats, hats, and 

blankets—must be clearly labeled with your child’s name. For safety, children must wear non‑slip shoes that fasten securely. Open‑toed shoes, open‑heeled shoes, sandals, and flip‑flops are not permitted.

• Nap Time

Children who are present during nap time will need a small blanket and may bring a small pillow if desired. These items must fit inside the bag provided by SELC. Blankets and pillows will be sent home weekly for laundering and must be returned on the first school day of the following week.

• Enjoy

This is a special season in your child’s life. Enjoy it.

• Open Door Policy

Our door is always open. Families are welcome to visit or observe at any time.

• Parties

Children may attend classroom parties even if the event falls on a day they do not normally attend. They may stay for the scheduled party time with a parent present.

• Toys

Please do not send personal toys to school. We encourage children to use our developmentally appropriate materials, and we cannot be responsible for lost or shared personal items. Some toys that are safe at home are not suitable for group care.

• Transportation

Parents are responsible for transporting their children to and from school. We will not be transporting children for any reason except an evacuation.

• Videos

Occasionally, the preschool may show age‑appropriate videos related to the current theme. Only G‑rated movies will be shown without a permission slip.
